How to Give a Cat Capstar

Capstar is an oral tablet used to treat fleas in cats and dogs. The active ingredient in Capstar, nitenpyram, kills adult fleas. It begins working within 30 minutes of administration and interferes with the neurological system of fleas. Capstar is indicated for use in kittens and cats four weeks of age or older and is also safe for use in pregnant and nursing cats. The most challenging part of using Capstar is giving your pet the pill.

Instructions

    • 1

Restrain your cat. You may choose to wrap a towel around your cat so that only its head is visible. Be sure to restrain all limbs to avoid injury.

    • 2

Place the Capstar tablet as far back into the cat's mouth as possible. A small plastic device called a "pill popper" may be used. This device allows you to release the pill into the back of the cat's mouth without sticking your fingers inside, reducing the risk of being bitten.

    • 3

      Close the cat's mouth gently.

    • 4

Rub the cat's throat until it swallows. Watch your cat carefully to make sure it does not regurgitate the pill.
