Croton Plant & Cats

Cats are notorious for getting into dangerous situations. With a little foresight and planning when choosing plants for your home and garden, you can eliminate potential hazards to your feline companion.

  1. Identification

    • Croton is the name of a genus in the taxonomic family Euphorbiacae. The name "croton" is also used as the common name of several plants in this category.

    Warning

    • All parts of the plants in the croton genus are toxic to cats. The toxins are carried in the oils of the plant.

    Effects

    • When ingested, croton plants cause nausea, vomiting, depression, lethargy, loss of appetite and ataxia. In rare cases, cats who eat croton fall into a coma or die. When physical contact is present without ingestion, a burning sensation and rash often occur.

    Solution

    • If you think your cat has eaten any part of a croton plant, seek emergency veterinary care immediately. If your cat suffers dermatological effects from contact with a croton plant, wash the area thoroughly with soap and water.

    Prevention

    • Restrict access to the areas of your house or yard that harbor croton plants. If this is not possible, supervise your cat when it is around these plants.
