Homemade Wormer for Kittens

Regular worming is an important part of caring for your kitten. If worms are left untreated, they can cause your kitten serious illness or death. There are wormers on the market that you can give your kitten to kill parasites; however, some of the chemicals in them can lower your pet̵7;s immune system and cause disease. Fortunately, there are natural worming treatments that you can use at home to keep your kitty parasite-free.
  1. Homemade Kitten Wormers

    • While there are several natural remedy suggestions for worming kittens, some of them will be difficult for your cat to ingest because they taste bad. You want to use a wormer that is virtually tasteless when mixed with food. Two popular natural wormers are food-grade diatomaceous earth (DE) and ground pumpkin seeds. You can use both remedies in either canned or dry kitten food, but kittens usually love canned food, so offering your kitten the remedy in a small amount of canned food first will work best to ensure that the kitty consumes the required dosage. You can follow up with dry food as desired.

    Food-Grade Diatomaceous Earth

    • According to Earthworkshealth.com, food-grade Diatomaceous Earth is a nontoxic, nonchemical organic product made of the fossilized remains of tiny microscopic shells. It comes already prepared in a 5 lb. bag, it has no detectable taste and it is safe for pets, humans and the environment.

Although food-grade DE is not a chemical, it has a chemical effect on parasites. Add ½ tsp. of DE to your kitten̵7;s food once a day for 90 days and every third day thereafter, to kill any existing worms and their eggs as well as to prevent future infestations. DE kills the parasites by dehydrating them; the parasites are then expelled through your kitten̵7;s feces.

    Ground Pumpkin Seeds

    • Ground pumpkin seeds are a remedy that you will have to prepare yourself, but fortunately, you will not have to shell them. Unshelled pumpkin seeds contain cucurbitin, an amino acid that eliminates intestinal parasites by paralyzing and expelling them from a kitten̵7;s digestive tract.

After washing and drying the seeds thoroughly, grind the seeds in a food blender until they are almost like powder. The seeds are most effective when they are freshly ground, so you will have to grind them right before every feeding. If you want to grind a large amount of seeds into powder ahead of time, be sure to store the powder in an air-tight container and keep it in the refrigerator. Add ¼ tsp. to each of your kitten̵7;s meals every day to kill existing worms and keep your pet worm-free.
