How to Make a Nesting Box for a Pregnant Cat

If you have a pregnant cat, there isn't much you can do for her before delivery except make her as comfortable as possible. Left to her own devices, she will start looking for a place to have her kittens. She will look for a place that is cozy, comfortable and safe. The best thing you can do for your cat is to make her a nesting box. If you make it far enough ahead of time, she will notice it and likely will take advantage of it.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a cardboard box or plastic box with sides that are somewhat tall so that the kittens cannot wander off after they are born. Do not use a small box or your cat might go find another place to have her babies.

    • 2

Tear rags into strips to provide soft and comfortable padding for the box. Place the strips in the box.

    • 3

Make small air holes around the sides so that the cats can breathe easily. You will need to use a knife to cut the holes. Do not make the holes large enough that the kittens could get their heads stuck and suffer injury.

    • 4

Cut another larger hole part way up the side so that the mother can get in and out to use her litter box.

    • 5

Place the lid on top or close up the cardboard box.

    • 6

Show the cat the box so that she can get accustomed to it.
