Jade Plants & Cats

The jade plant, known scientifically as crassula argentea, is a common household plant that indoor cats are often exposed to. It is important to know what the effects might be of your cat ingesting this plant, in order to avoid potential emergencies.
  1. Identification

    • Jade plants are marked by round, thick leaves that are dark green in color. They prefer well-drained soil and produce small pink or white flowers.

    Common Effects

    • The ASPCA's Poison Control Center lists the jade plant as being toxic to cats. Common side effects of accidental ingestion include stomach upset, vomiting, diarrhea and uncoordinated movements (ataxia).

    Serious Effects

    • Extreme side effects due to a cat eating a jade plant are rare. A decreased heart rate is possible. There is currently no information indicating that the jade plant is deadly to cats.

    Prevention

    • To avoid accidental ingestion, keep your jade plant in a room that is not accessible to your cat.

    Considerations

    • In the event of accidental ingestion, speak to your veterinary health care provider. Although the potential for severe side effects is minimal, action may need to be taken to prevent further complications.
