Hartz Toxicity in Cats

Hartz Mountain Corporation produces at least 21 different cat products to control parasites. Some cat products are topical, others are household applications for bedding and carpet. Hartz feline pet products are allegedly related to thousands of cat illnesses and cat deaths.

  1. Active Ingredients

    • Many Harts parasite treatment products for cats contain active ingredients called pyrethrins which are considered natural insecticides that affect the nervous system.

    Pyrethrins

    • Pyrethrins are derived from chrysanthemum flowers. According to www.peteducation.com, they have been in use for over 100 years and are utilized in the majority of flea and tick products.

    Pyrethrin Toxicosis Symptoms

    • Cats that experience a toxic reaction to Hartz products may exhibit symptoms such as seizures, excessive salivation, vomiting, lethargy, depression, loss of coordination and tremors.

    Treatment

    • Bathing the cat with a mild soap immediately upon noticing symptoms may aid in alleviating the toxicosis affects. Veterinary care, including anesthesia or Valium to control seizure activity, may be necessary.

    Avoiding Toxicity

    • Avoid toxicity by speaking to a veterinarian about alternate parasite products and avoiding the use of over-the-counter products as well as products containing pyrethrins.
