How to Find a Feline Specialist

Many cat owners understandably want the best health care for their furry companion. Excellent general practitioners are everywhere, whether they specialize in feline medicine or not. However, some owners prefer to take the extra steps to find a veterinarian who is either a board-certified feline specialist or has a strong interest in feline medicine. If this is you, this article will help you by explaining two useful ways to go about finding the right veterinarian for you and your cat.

Instructions

  1. The American Board of Veterinary Practitioners

    • 1

Visit The American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) website at ABVP.com. The ABVP provides a fully-accredited certification process for veterinarians wishing to become board-certified in a certain species. Their website allows you to search for a board-certified feline diplomat.

    • 2

When you get to the home page, click on "Find A Diplomat" on the left-hand-side of the screen.

    • 3

The next screen allows you to search for a diplomat by city, state, last name, practice name, and practice category (feline, avian, equine, etc). You may use any or all of these search parameters. The results of a search will provide you the name, business address, and phone number of a specific board-certified diplomat.

The American Association of Feline Practitioners

    • 4

Visit The American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) website at Catvets.com. According to their website, "The American Association of Feline Practitioners improves the health and welfare of cats by supporting high standards of practice, continuing education, and scientific investigation." While any veterinarian may become a member of the AAFP (not only board-certified veterinarians), you can rest assured that member veterinarians have a strong interest in feline medicine.

    • 5

Click on "Find a Feline Practitioner" near the middle of the screen, when you get to the home page.

    • 6

The next screen allows you to search for a member veterinarian by zip or postal code and by distance from the zip or postal code in miles. The results provided will give you the doctor's name, practice type, practice address, phone number, and website if available.

    • 7

Utilize the advanced search if you would like a more detailed search or would like to find a member veterinarian outside of North America. This allows you to search by country, state or province, city, practice type (small animal, feline only, etc), practice name, first name, and last name. The results provided will give you the doctor's name, practice type, practice address, phone number, and website if available.
