How to Stop a Cat From Being in Heat

Female cats that have not been spayed by a veterinarian will be in heat, or estrus, a few times a year and it can begin at a few months of age. Most cats display universal symptoms when they are in heat. They usually continually rub against objects or people and exhibit a loud howl to let male cats know they are ready to mate. Female cats may also urinate on objects or the floor. There are certain methods that can calm a cat in heat or avoid it all together.

Instructions

    • 1

Have your female cat spayed by a licensed veterinarian if you have noticed the above symptoms and you do not want your cat to have kittens. Spaying your cat will permanently prevent her from coming into heat.

    • 2

Let your cat mate with a male cat. This will stop the symptoms when she is in heat, but will most likely result in pregnancy. If you are concerned she will get pregnant, then keep your cat indoors.

    • 3

Consider hormonal injections or other medications that will temporarily prevent your cat from coming into heat if your cat is a breeder. Discuss these methods with your veterinarian.

    • 4

Calm your cat while she is in heat by paying extra attention to her. Play, cuddle or brush your pet, which will help her keep the focus off of being in heat.

    • 5

Wait until the spring months are over and keep your cat inside until the mating season has completed. Consider having your cat spayed after she is no longer in heat.
