Metacam Usage in Cats

Metacam is the brand name for meloxicam, a drug often prescribed as a pain reliever for cats. While it does provide powerful pain relief, Metacam can have serious side effects in cats.
  1. Anti-Inflammatory

    • Metacam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) similar to aspirin and ibuprofen. It inhibits COX-2, an enzyme that generates compounds that contribute to inflammation and pain.

    Uses in Cats

    • Metacam is used to relieve the pain of arthritis and cancer. It is also given to cats for postoperative pain.

    Off Label Use

    • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Metacam as a one-time subcutaneous injection for cats. However, it's legal for veterinarians to use the oral suspension off label for cats who suffer from chronic pain.

    Common Side Effects

    • The most common side effects of Metacam in cats are weight loss, nose bleeds, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

    Kidney Failure

    • In rare cases, Metacam can cause stomach ulcers, internal bleeding and low blood supply to the kidneys, leading to kidney failure and death. Liver disease is another rare side effect in cats treated with Metacam.

    Contraindications

    • Metacam should be used with caution in cats with liver, kidney or heart disease.
