Things You'll Need
- Warm water
- Soft cotton cloth
- Eye drops
- Eye ointment
Instructions
Dab the tip of a soft cotton cloth in warm water and gently move it across the cat's eyelid to break up crusty discharge. Continue to do this until the eye and surrounding area are clean.
Apply eye drops four to six times a day. Two people may be required to do this, with one person holding the cat steady and the other holding the cat's eyes open to administer the drops.
Squeeze about 1/2 inch of ointment onto your fingertip. Spread the ointment across the surface of the cat's eye, then close the lid gently with your finger so the ointment can reach all areas of the eye. You may want to rub the eyelid to help distribute the ointment.
Remove the presence of allergens that may contribute to irritation and drainage. Longhaired cats, for example, tend to experience more frequent problems because of shedding, so be sure to brush your cat regularly to remove excess hair.
Antibiotic or pill treatment may be required if your cat suffers from a more serious illness. When administering pills to your cat, gently pry the mouth open and push the pill into the cat's throat. Stroke the throat to promote swallowing and offer your cat a drink of water to help ease any irritation or dryness.
