Are Peonies Poisonous for Cats?

Peony plants, which have colorful blooms, often are found in gardens and floral arrangements. However, these plants are poisonous for cats.
  1. Facts

    • In some types of plants, only certain parts are toxic for your cat, while other plants--such as peonies--are toxic throughout.

    Symptoms

    • Common symptoms of poisoning include vomiting and diarrhea. Some cats also will display severe depression.

    Treatment

    • If your cat ingests peonies, call your veterinarian or local animal emergency clinic.

    Considerations

    • Domesticated cats--especially younger cats and kittens--have a higher risk of peony poisoning than feral cats, according to the Feline Advisory Bureau.

    Prevention

    • Do not bring floral arrangements containing peonies into your home. If you grow peonies in your garden, do not allow your cat access to this area.
