Safety First
-
Always wash your hands after handling, cleaning or changing the litter pan. In addition, pregnant women and immune-compromised people should wear rubber, latex or neoprene gloves.
Toxoplasmosis
-
Toxoplasmosis is the biggest threat from litter pans. It is a parasite that is passed through the feces.
E. Coli
-
The E. Coli bacteria is another serious threat from any fecal waste. There are no easy treatments for toxoplasmosis or E. Coli poisoning. Both can lead to death.
Symptoms
-
Toxoplasmosis and E. Coli cause similar symptoms (both animals and humans) including diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration, appetite loss and bloody stools. Toxoplasmosis also causes birth defects in developing babies.
Considerations
-
Toxoplasmosis and E. Coli may also be found in infected cattle. Always cook meat thoroughly and wash your hands after handling any meat.
Facts
-
Cats will not use litter pans if they are dirty or if the litter smells too strong. Also, refusal to use the litter pan can have underlying medical, physical and psychological causes.
