What Are the Signs of Feline Renal Failure?

Feline chronic renal failure, commonly referred to as CRF, is a disease mainly affecting the feline kidneys and can be spotted through many common symptoms.
  1. Common Signs

    • Felines experiencing renal failure often exhibit signs of dehydration, stomach irritation, lethargy, depression and increased thirst. These symptoms can also be associated with diseases such as diabetes and hyperthyroidism, so consult your vet to rule out other causes.

    Condition-Specific Signs

    • Chronic renal failure is commonly found in older felines. Convulsions, low temperature, vomiting and increased urination may indicate an older cat has CRF.

    Causes

    • No exact cause for renal failure in felines has been determined, but factors such as genetics, environment and high blood pressure have all been noted as contributors to the condition.

    Prognosis

    • Prognosis for cats with renal failure is not positive; however, most cases can be managed for months to years after diagnosis with proper diet attention from caregivers and vets.

    Breeds Affected

    • CRF has been linked to specific breeds. Russian Blue, Burmese and Siamese cats have a higher risk of CRF than other breeds.
