Methionine for Urinary Tract Infections in Cats

In felines, the urinary tract includes the kidneys, the bladder, the urethra and the ureters. An infection can occur in any portion of the urinary tract, but fortunately, treating a urinary tract infection (UTI) is fairly easy.
  1. Symptoms

    • If suffering from a UTI, your cat may display symptoms such as howling or meowing during urination, which may indicate a painful urination. There may also be blood in the urine or changes in urination habits such as more frequent or a total lack of urination.

    Identification

    • Methionine is a neutral amino acid that is obtained through a healthy diet. It is responsible for preventing health issues and protects the kidneys, fur, nails and skin.

    Usage

    • Methionine is a urinary acidifier used to treat urinary tract infections, but can also be used to treat strong-scented urine.

    Brand Names

    • For veterinary purposes, methionine may go by the names of Ammonil, Methio-Tabs and Methio-Form; some of which come in a chewable tablet form.

    Warnings

    • Methionine should be given with a meal to prevent stomach disturbance and should not be given to cats who are suffering from pancreatic disease or renal failure. Methionine should be used with caution in cats suffering from liver disease.
