Treating Flatulence in Cats
-
There are several treatments for gas in cats including medications as well as natural remedies. Pimpinella anisum has been used for years to treat digestive problems in animals which in turn helps to relieve gas and also aids with healthy digestion. Acidophilus has also been recommended for gas in cats. Acidophilus is a powdered form of a bacteria known as Lactobacillus. When the intestines become compromised by illness, the normal healthy bacteria that help in digestion are often killed and replaced by "bad" bacteria which can cause problems such as gas and diarrhea. Acidophilus can prevent this from happening and helps to maintain a balance of good and bad bacteria. There are also homeopathic medications designed to reduce gas such as Flatulence Preventer and Digestive Support that can be purchased on-line at stores such as PetAlive.com.
Certain over-the-counter medications designed for humans can often be given to cats as well to treat the symptoms of gas. Simethicone is one of these medications. The dose for a cat is 1/4 the dose of an adult human. It is important to note that while Pepto Bismol can be given to dogs, it is highly toxic in cats and should never be administered.
It is also recommended to consult with your veterinarian who can prescribe medication to help relieve gas in cats. These can include Carminative, Zinc acetate, Yucca schidigera and dry activated charcoal. Check with your veterinarian before administering any of these as the cat's age and weight should be taken into consideration.

Gas Preventive Medication for Cats
Flatulence, also known as gas, is the distension of the stomach or intestines with air that is then expelled from the body through the anus. Gastrointestinal gas comes from swallowed air or from gas produced by the bacterial fermentation of ingested food. Although gas production in the gastrointestinal tract of cats is normal, any excessive production may indicate a disease or disorder that will require treatment.
