Natural Stress Relief for Cats

Like their owners, cats can also suffer from stress. Anxiety in cats often leads to unwanted behaviors, including aggression, litter problems and excessive grooming. According to the book, "The Cat Bible," by author Tracie Hotchner, while prescription medications and synthetic remedies are available to relieve your cat's stress, there are a range of natural alternatives that can calm your cat without the side-effects and toxins of conventional solutions.
  1. Identify the Cause

    • Anxiety in cats can be triggered by a number of changes in the environment, or may be a sign of a more serious health problem. Once you have ruled out any other health concern by talking to your veterinarian, identify changes in your cat's environment or routine that may be uprooting its sense of security. Your cat can become stressed by a guest in the house, the constant noise from construction across the street or the appearance of new cats outside. Do not rule out changes or added stress in your own life. Hotchner writes that cats pick up on subtle cues from their owners and will often react based on those signals.

    Create a "Snug Retreat"

    • Every cat needs a shelter to escape to when its emotions are overwhelmed, cat expert Anita Frazier said. Creating a "snug retreat" in a quiet corner of your home can help. Place a medium-sized cardboard box on its side. For added comfort, place an old sweatshirt or a soft towel made of all-natural fabric. Wash the fabric at least once a week.

    Flower Essences

    • Flower essences are herbal distillations designed to alleviate a range of conditions that are free of negative side effects. They are a safe, affordable and simple way to ease your cat's anxiety. You can simply place a few drops in your cat's water bowl, or rub them on the inside of its ear to guarantee a full dosage. Hotchner recommends Dr. Bach's Rescue Remedy as safe and effective for both cats and their owners, while Spirits Essences offers pet-only remedies such as Hyper-Helper and Obsession Remedy.

    Natural Supplements

    • All-natural supplements supply an extra boost of stress-alleviating vitamins and minerals and are available in both a liquid and a soft chew form. As different supplements are designed to handle a specific set of circumstances, select a supplement that will fit your cat's needs. Calming by Pet Natural's is meant for short-term use and becomes effective within 15 minutes of ingestion. For long-term alleviation, Composure by Vetri-Science becomes effective in within 10 to 14 days.
