How to Clean Cat Pee Out of the Carpet

Cats pee outside their litter boxes for a variety of reasons, ranging from protest to health problems. The urine leaves an awful smell. Cleaning up the urine itself will not eliminate the smell. One of the more common reasons a cat pees on the floor is behavioral. For example, if its litter box is dirty, the cat may pee on the floor to tell you to clean it. Cats sometimes also pee out of the litter box to show that they are sick. If you see blood, crystals or smell something unusual in the urine, take the cat to the vet.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on rubber gloves. Stack three or four paper towels on the cat urine. Tap the paper towel to soak up the urine. Throw the soaked paper towels in to a trash bag. Tie the bag closed and throw it in an outside trashcan. If you don't want to waste a trash bag, use a plastic grocery sack.

    • 2

Rinse the item with cold water, if possible. If you can't rinse it, wet it with wet paper towels.

    • 3

Cover the area with a thick layer of baking soda. The baking soda helps neutralize the odor. Let the baking soda sit for two hours.

    • 4

Vacuum the baking soda up from the item.

    • 5

Pour vinegar over the surface to wet it. Let the vinegar air dry. It soaks into the surface.
