Thymoma in Cats

Thymoma is an uncommon tumor that is often found in older cats. They are usually noncancerous; however, the size of the mass can displace organs such as the heart and lungs. The median age for a cat diagnosed with a thymoma tumor is 9 years. Symptoms usually come on suddenly and without warning.

    • Symptoms of thymoma in cats include coughing, muscle weakness and swelling of the head and neck.

    Diagnosis

    • Diagnosis is made by an aspiration cytology or a tissue biopsy of the mass.

    Treatment

    • According to the Veterinary Society of Surgical Oncology, treatment options for thymomas in animals include surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy. It's easier to remove thymoma in a cat than in a dog.

    Outcome

    • Following surgery you should follow up with your veterinarian every three months to check for reoccurrence.
