Instructions
Feed your cat a high-quality food. Better nutrition leads to less shedding. When shopping for a high-quality cat food, be sure the label lists an animal protein as its first ingredient. This animal protein might be in the form of chicken, beef, turkey or some type of fish. Food labels list ingredients in the order of quantity in the product. This means corn, which is filler in cat foods, shouldn't be closer to the front of the list than number three.
Supplement your cat's diet with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. These supplements will soften your cat's skin and reduce shedding. There are several fatty-acid supplements designed specifically for cats that are available at pet stores or from your veterinarian. Or, you can add fish oils to your cat's diet. Look at dosage recommendations on the specific supplement product you are using or follow your veterinarian's recommendation. It's usually best to start with half the recommended dose and gradually work up to the full dose. This may prevent your cat from getting an upset stomach.
Brush your cat daily. This will keep her coat healthier and reduce the amount she sheds.
Use the vacuum and lint brush to remove hair from carpets and furniture. Despite your best efforts, cats naturally shed and no matter what you do, there will be some fur in your house.
