How to Lower the PH in Cat Urine

Cats that produce more acidic urine (urine with a lower pH) are less likely to form struvite crystals and bladder stones and can show a decrease in the number of urinary tract infections they have over their lifetime. You can achieve a less alkaline, or more acidic, urine in you cat through medications and even dietary measures. Speak with your veterinarian about whether you need to lower the pH in your cat's urine and the best way to do so if this is necessary.

Instructions

  1. Lower Feline Urinary pH

    • 1

Feed your cat a specialized diet to promote the production of more acidic urine. These diets are prepared commercially and are available through your veterinarian. They should contain large amounts of animal- and fish-based protein.

    • 2

Add cranberry juice to your cat's diet. You can administer cranberry extract easily using a dropper or can hide it in your cat's food. Two or three drops daily will acidify your cat's urine naturally.

    • 3

Instead of feeding at specific mealtimes, let your cat nibble on his food throughout the day. This allows the urine to become slightly more acidic.

    • 4

Speak to your veterinarian about urine-acidifying drug therapy for your cat. These medications, given orally, lower urine pH quickly.
