Hct in Cats

Hematocrit (Hct) is the ratio of red blood cells to a given volume of blood. The hematocrit is obtained through a blood test using a centrifuge method. The result is called the hematocrit value and is expressed as a percentage.
  1. Function

    • The Hct test is given to a cat in order to diagnose and treat a variety of blood conditions, including renal disease by determining if the cat is anemic.

    Normal

    • Normal Hct levels for cats is between 29.3 to 49.8 percent.

    Mild

    • Mild anemia is indicated by an Hct of 20 to 25 percent. The treatment is to give B vitamins and iron.

    Severe

    • If the Hct level is between 15 to 19 percent, human erythropoietin may be given in addition to B vitamins and iron.

    Very Severe

    • In addition to human erythropoietin, B vitamins and iron, a blood transfusion might be indicated if the Hct level falls below 10 to15 percent, however the cat's overall condition is also a factor.

    Exception

    • A blood transfusion might still be recommended even if the Hct level is higher than the very severe level if the cat also needs surgery or if the cat has acute anemia.
