Constipation
-
Constipation can be easily treated with a few simple home remedies. Plain canned pumpkin added to the cat's food on a regular basis provides your cat with essential fiber to prevent constipation in the first place. During an episode of constipation, add a tablespoon or two of the pumpkin to your cat's food to aid in relief. Feed your cat canned food to ensure he consumes enough moisture. Give 1/2 tsp. of petroleum jelly daily to provide a feline laxative. You can also try giving your cat 1/8 cup of milk twice daily as a laxative until the constipation is resolved.
Vomiting
-
To relieve feline vomiting, try putting your cat on a 24-hour fast to allow his stomach to heal and to decrease inflammation of the stomach lining. During the fast, do not offer food but allow access to water. Bland food such as cooked rice may be offered after the fast, then begin adding canned food to the rice until the cat is back to normal. One tablespoon of cooled peppermint tea will soothe his upset stomach. Hairballs are a common cause of both vomiting and constipation, so a good remedy to try if your cat suffers from these simultaneously is 1/2 tsp. of petroleum jelly given daily until the problem clears up.
Home Remedy Warnings
-
Constipation may cause your cat to become dehydrated, so it is important to ensure the cat consumes enough fluids to prevent this from happening. Constipation can also lead to serious conditions such as constipation (blockage of the colon) or mega colon (a condition caused when the colon has become enlarged due to a prolonged blockage). These conditions can lead to surgical procedures or even death, so it is important to seek veterinary assistance if your cat is severely constipated. If your cat vomits persistently for more than one day and is unable to keep water down, you must seek immediate veterinary help.
