Autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), can cause premature destruction of blood platelets. This occurs when the immune system malfunctions and triggers the destruction of the platelets.
Infectious Diseases

In some cases, cats can develop thrombocytopenia through an infection. For example, ehrlichiosis is an infection that destroys various cells in the body and can cause feline thrombocytopenia.
Hemorrhage

An injury or accident can cause a cat to suffer from extreme blood loss, which in turn can cause low blood platelet levels.
Cancer

Treatment

To specifically treat feline thrombocytopenia, some cats may require a platelet transfusion or a full blood transfusion. Underlying conditions, such as infections, should also be treated to prevent thrombocytopenia from reoccurring.
