Use of Lamisil in Cats

Lamisil is a brand name for the oral prescription medication terbinafine. Veterinarians sometimes prescribe Lamisil for the treatment of the fungal-infection ringworm in cats.

  1. Function

    • Lamisil works by preventing fungal cells from producing ergosterol, a substance vital for nutrients to enter the cells. Without ergosterol, the fungal cells become weakened and either die on their own or can be fought by the cat's immune system.

    Time Frame

    • Veterinarians prescribe Lamisil for anywhere from 15 to 28 days, according to Newman Veterinary Medical Services. The specific duration of the treatment depends upon the severity of the infection and the general health of the cat.

    Side Effects

    • The most common side effect of Lamisil in cats is vomiting.

    Benefits

    • Besides being effective, Lamisil causes fewer side effects than other antifungal medications for ringworm, such as itraconazole. This makes it a good alternative for animals who are sensitive to medications.

    Considerations

    • Lamisil is also used to treat fungal infections in humans; however, it is not safe to give medication prescribed for humans to a cat. Lamisil for cats should be dispensed by a veterinarian or veterinary pharmacist.
