Uses

Metacam is used to treat osteoarthritis and postoperative pain. It is in a class of medications called "non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs." They are effective in reducing pain, inflammation and fever.
Dosage

Oral liquids of Metacam are available for cats as well as an injection. Metacam 0.5 mg per mL injections are given either all at once for surgery or 2 to 3 times per week as needed. Oral liquids are available with 1.5 mg of the active ingredient per mL of solution or 0.5 mg per mL. A typical dose for a cat is around 0.2 mg per kg of body weight.
Side Effects

Certain side effects have been associated with Metacam use such as bloody, dark or tarry stool, stomach or intestinal ulcers, vomiting, loss of kidney function, intestinal bleeding and loss of appetite.
Warnings

Cats that have a history of bleeding, inflammation or perforations in the stomach or intestines should not be given this medication.
Interactions

Corticosteroids including prednisone and cortisone, phenylbutazone and aspirin increase the risk of getting an ulcer when used in combination with Metacam.
