Ear disease in cats can be caused by allergies, parasites, microorganisms such as bacteria or yeast, foreign bodies or unclean ears. Symptoms of ear disease include odor, discharge, redness, swelling, pain or excessive scratching or head shaking. Treatment depends on the cause, but often involves antibiotics or ear drops; however, prevention through regular ear cleaning is the best treatment.
Things You'll Need
- Almond oil, aloe vera juice, green tea or Arnica oil
- Ear dropper
- Cotton balls
Instructions
Homemade Feline Ear Wash
Drop 1/2 tsp almond oil in each ear with an ear dropper to reduce excess waxy buildup. Another option for an ear solution is green tea. If you choose this option, put two tea bags in a mug and fill with bowling water. Let sit for 10 minutes before removing tea bags. Allow to cool and use to flush ears.
Use 1/2 tsp aloe vera juice or Arnica oil for red, inflamed ears that are causing pain. Use ear dropper to fill the ear, regardless of which cleanser you use.
Hold the ear closed after inserting the drops and massage for 20 to 30 seconds to thoroughly clean the ear and avoid being sprayed with solution when your cat shakes his head.
Wipe out loose debris and excess liquid with a cotton ball. Only use the cotton ball on the outer edges of the ear. Do not insert it into the ear canal.
