Eye Infections
-
Eye infections in kittens can be caused by a viral infection, bacterial infection or corneal injury.
Treatment
-
The Food and Drug Administration approved the use of Neosporin ophthalmic ointment for eye infections in humans. Veterinary experts Drs. Foster and Smith say the most effective treatment for feline eye infections is an ointment with Terramycin, after being diagnosed by a veterinarian.
Antibiotic Ointments
-
Ophthalmic ointments for pets usually contain potent antibiotics, such as Oxytetracycline and Polymyxin B. Neosporin contains Bacitracin Zinc, Neomycin Sulfate and Polymyxin B Sulfate, which may not be effective in treating the eye infection.
Precautions
-
Sometimes an infection can be a combination of bacterial, viral and irritation. If not treated properly, your kitten pet could lose its eye. See a veterinarian to get an accurate diagnosis.
When To See A Vet
-
If your kitten exhibits symptoms of an eye infection, such as squinting, discharge, redness or tearing, a veterinarian should be consulted.
