Are Peace Lilies Harmful to Cats If Chewed or Eaten?

Peace lilies are seasonal red or white flowers that are often given as gifts during the holidays. Though common in many households, peace lilies are poisonous to cats. Other types of flowers in the lily family are also dangerous to cats and should be kept out of the home.

    Features

    • All parts of peace lilies are poisonous to cats if ingested, not just the flower and leaves. Even a little nibble can seriously injure a feline.

    • Cats that have eaten part of a lily plant may experience kidney failure within two days. Other symptoms of poisoning are vomiting and lethargy.

    Action

    • If you see your cat eating a peace lily, or if your cat is showing symptoms of lily poisoning, immediately take your cat to a veterinarian.

    Types

    • Other lilies that cause similar symptoms in cats are Easter lilies, tiger lilies, Japanese show lilies, Asian lilies, stargazer lilies and rubrum lilies.

    Alternatives

    • Alternative holiday flowers that are nontoxic to cats include Easter daisies, Easter orchids and Easter cactus.
