How to Use Terramycin Powder for Cats

Terramycin (Oxytetracycline) is an antibiotic that restrains bacteria in two ways: first, by slowing growth of the offending organism and second, by curbing the bacteria's ability to synthesize protein. This is a tetracycline-class antibiotic, along with doxycycline and minocycline antibiotics. It is used in both companion animals, such as cats and dogs, and in herd animals where the threat of disease spread exists.

Things You'll Need

  • 10 mg of Terramycin powder per pound of body weight (20 mg/kg)
  • Wet cat food

Instructions

  1. Drug Administration

    • 1

Give your cat the Terramycin orally at 12 hour intervals.

    • 2

When it is time to administer the drug, encouraging your cat to take it may be challenging. If the Terramycin is unpalatable to your cat, add a little sugar to the water the drug is suspended in, or add the drug dose to wet cat food every 12 hours.

    • 3

Complete the full course of Terramycin treatment prescribed relative to the specific infection that is being treated. Even though your cat's condition should improve if this antibiotic's administration is tolerated by your cat, completing the full course of the drug is necessary.
