The elixir was developed in a spraying technique where the drugs ketoprofen, dextrin and sodium lauryl sulfate were dissolved in an ethanol water mixture and spray dried to form the ketofen dry elixir.
Function
-
According to Drugs.com the primary function of Ketofen is inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis (a catalytic activity that is responsible for pain, fever and inflammation). It is known to work against acute, sub-acute and chronic inflammation.
Side Effects
-
Common side effects of Ketofen elixir in cats are ulcers of the GI tract and drop of red blood cell count due to bleeding, and rare side effects include protein loss, bleeding disorders and kidney failure. Injection site reactions may occur if the substance re-enters the injection site.
Warnings
-
Do not use Ketofen elixir on cats that are known to be hypersensitive to NSAIDS or have kidney disease, liver disease or GI problems. Cats using long-term management therapy should be closely monitored. Do not use Ketofen elixir if your cat is allergic or sensitive to aspirin.
Overdose
-
Early signs of an overdose are loss of appetite and depression. High toxicity levels can cause GI tract ulcers, or liver and kidney damage.
