Cat Mange Symptoms

There are several different types of mange that can affect cats. It is often difficult to determine the type of mange that is affecting the cat since they are constantly cleaning themselves and removing the mites in the process. Many times diagnosis is made by the area and type of sores that are present.

  1. Ear Mites

    • Ear mites feed off scaly skin and produce a dry, black, crusty substance in the ears. These mites are highly contagious to other cats and dogs and cause extreme itching.

    Notoedric Mange

    • Notoedric mange, also known as cat scabies, actually burrows into the cat's skin, causing hair loss and crusty sores. This mite is usually found on the head and is highly contagious.

    Demodectic Mange

    • Demodectic mange is rare in cats. Hair loss and inflamed patches of skin can be found in small areas or all over the body.

    Cheyletiella Mange

    • Cheyletiella mange, also called walking dandruff, is a large red mite that causes flaking of the skin, itching and red bumps. This is usually located on the back, neck and sides

    Trombiculid Mites

    • Trombiculid mites, better known as chiggers, cause red, raw skin that forms into scabs. These mites look like colored spots on the skin.
