Clindamycin for Cats

A common and usually relatively harmless parasite, Toxoplasma gondii, infects both animals and humans. While most cats show no symptoms of infection, those with weakened immune systems can develop toxoplasmosis, experiencing fever, loss of energy and appetite or pneumonia. Clindamycin is an antibiotic that is effective against toxoplasmosis and other infections.

  1. Function

    • Clindamycin belongs to the lincosamide family of antibiotics. It works at the level of the toxmoplasma's DNA, preventing the organism from building the protein it needs to survive.

    Benefits

    • In addition to its off-label use in treating toxoplasmosis, clindamycin is prescribed for bacterial infections that survive without oxygen. It is useful, according to Mar Vista Vet, for combating wound and gum infections.

    Types

    • Clindamycin for cats is available as a liquid. Many cats find its bitter taste unacceptable. Refrigerating clindamycin may make it more palatable.

    Dosage

    • Clindamycin dosage depends on the severity of a cat's condition. For bacterial infections, typical doses are 5 to 15 mg per five pounds of body weight administered once daily. Toxoplasmosis requires higher doses.

    Warning

    • High clindamycin doses can cause cats to vomit or refuse food, says the World Small Animal Veterinary Association. Cats taking clindamycin for more than 30 days need their kidney and liver function monitored.
