Ways to Increase Cats' Water Consumption

Drinking enough water is essential for your cat's health. If your cat doesn't want to drink water, it might mean that he just isn't healthy. However, if your cat is sick and needs to drink more water, or if a vet has told you your cat is dehydrated and needs more water, you might want to find ways to encourage your cat to drink more water. There are several strategies you can try.

  1. Clean and Fresh

    • Some cats don't like to drink water because they are picky about what they are eating and drinking from. If your cat isn't drinking enough water, first try to replace her water dish with something that is brand new. Don't use a used dish, and don't use a dish that is made for human food. Buy a brand new, never-been-used cat water dish. Fill it with fresh and clean water, and put it in a brand new place near your cat's food. Changing the dish and the location might make the water more tempting for your cat. Refresh and change the cat's water several times a day to encourage your cat to drink water.

    Running Water

    • If your cat still does not drink enough water, try to tantalize her with running water. Some cats like to drink water that is running because it is more interesting and fun to drink. Buy a water fountain dish at your local pet supply store. Hook it up so that it runs constantly. This will provide your cat with running water to drink, and the water will be fresher as well. Many cats are more apt to drink running water than stagnant water.

    Water Injections

    • As a last resort, your vet might suggest that you force your cat to drink water. Ask your vet for the amount of water your cat should be drinking per day, and divide that amount into 8 parts. Use a syringe with no needle attached. Eight times a day, hold your cat on a level table. Grasp her by the back of her jaw with your thumb and middle finger. Use your forefinger to gently but firmly pull down on your cat's lower jaw. As soon as her mouth opens, stick in the syringe and empty it into the back of her throat. She will have no choice but to swallow the water.
