Treating a cat's urinary tract problem at the vet can be a costly proposition. Commonly, anything that affects a cat's bladder or urinary tract is classified as Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD). FLUTD can become quite serious and if left untreated, can lead to death. But there are ways you can treat FLUTD through homeopathic and herbal means.
-
Cranberry Extract
-
Cranberry helps to fight bacteria from building up on the walls of the urinary tract, and adds acid to the urine, which makes it even harder for bacteria to thrive. It may be hard to get your cat to drink cranberry juice, so you can also use a cranberry extract crushed up in the cat's food or a treat. Peanut butter is a good mixing agent. Give the cat a dose that is equal to their body mass.
Vitamin C
-
Vitamin C can be used to boost a cat's strength when battling the symptoms of FLUTD. Giving them a twice-daily dose, around 250 to 500 milligrams depending on the size of the cat, will strengthen the bladder lining and also works to reduce inflammation. Too much vitamin C can cause diarrhea so keep an eye on the cat's stool. Crush up the pill and mix it in a favorite food, like tuna or milk.
Cantharis
-
Cantharis is a homeopathic remedy made from the toxic secretion of the spanish fly. Cantharis is a derivative of that toxin, called cantharidin, which helps to ease the burning pain associated with urination when the cat has FLUTD. The recommended amount is two to three pellets, two to three times a day. Cantharis can be purchased at most pet food stores.
Tincture
-
Tincture is an herbal antibiotic that can help with irritation of the bowels. It can be purchased at most reputable health food stores and comes as a liquid. To administer tincture, open the cat's mouth and squeeze out half a dropper full of the herb two times a day.
