How Can I Remove a Tick on a Cat?

If you have an outdoor cat, chances are your cat will bring home a tick or two. Ticks can cause just as much damage to a feline as they can to a human. It is important to remove the tick properly and as soon as possible. This way your cat has less of a chance of contracting a condition such as Lyme disease.

  1. Get Your Supplies Ready

    • Most likely your cat will try to get away while you are attempting to remove the tick. It will help if you have your supplies ready to go. You will need a pair of gloves and a set of tweezers. You will also want someone else to assist you to hold the cat down while you remove the tick. Finally, you will need to have a small jar with a little alcohol in it. This is where you will place the tick once you remove it.

    Removing the Tick

    • Take your pair of tweezers and grab the tick by the head. Do not grab the tick by the body because the body could break loose and leave the head inside of your cat. The head will be partly inside of your cat, so get as close to the skin as you can. Then lift upward. The tick dug its head in to your cat in a downward direction so the head will come back out without breaking off only if you pull upward.

    Dispose of the Tick

    • Ticks are very hard to kill. You can't squish them with your fingers, and flushing them down the toilet can be problematic. Ticks can survive in water, and you don't want them crawling back up and out of your toilet. There are two ways you can dispose of your tick. The best way is to fill a small jar with alcohol and place the tick in it. This is poison to the tick and should kill the tick in 10 minutes. You could also burn the tick in an ashtray with a match. Just watch out because the tick could go flying after it pops from being burned.
