Potassium supplements for cats are usually prescribed by veterinarians when cats have hypokalemia (low potassium levels in the blood). This most commonly develops as a result of kidney failure.
-
Significance
-
Potassium is necessary for life, and cats without enough of it will exhibit symptoms such as weakness (especially of the neck), pain, weight loss and hair loss. If left untreated, low potassium levels (hypokalemia) can be fatal due to organ failure.
Causes
-
The most common reason cats need potassium supplements is kidney failure or insufficiency, which is usually related to aging. However, it can also be caused by infection, illness and disease.
Identification
-
Potassium levels are checked by taking a blood sample. Be aware that some cats with low potassium will not show outward symptoms.
Types
-
Potassium supplements come in three main forms: Potassium Gluconate (OTC tablets, powders and gels), Potassium Citrate (tablets and liquids), and Potassium Chloride (a liquid that is usually given intravenously).
Considerations
-
Although many potassium supplements are available over-the-counter, they are best given under the supervision of a veterinarian. Most cats don't need potassium supplements unless they have an underlying illness that needs additional medical attention.
