Pregnancy Stages in Cats

Pregnant cats show different signs at different stages. The entire pregnancy takes between three to three-and-a-half months. During the first two stages , there will not be immediate physical signs and symptoms can be misinterpreted for illness. You should take the cat to a veterinarian to make sure of the cat's condition.

  1. First Signs

    • Pregnant cats have a decreased activity level, and will want to sleep more. Outside cats will stay inside willingly.

    Personality Changes

    • Pregnant cats will become either more affectionate or more withdrawn, depending on their original nature. Pregnant cats may seem more anxious, especially if this is their first time being pregnant.

    Physical Changes

    • The nipples of the cat will become enlarged and pink after three weeks. Weight gain begins between three and five weeks.

    Nesting

    • Pregnant cats look for secluded or hidden spaces to have their kittens. Dark spaces, closets, under stairs, basements or attics are normal spots for a cat to hide.

    Birth

    • The cat will take hours to give birth and clean the kittens. A mother will want to be alone with the kittens for the first day
