Budesonide for Cats

If your cat suffers from inflammatory bowel disease, your vet might prescribe budesonide, a powerful corticosteroid. Marketed under the brand names Entocort EC and Entocord, budesonide works by reducing inflammation in your pet's intestinal tract. While most cats respond well to budesonide therapy, it's contraindicated for felines suffering from certain conditions, including liver disease, diabetes, cataracts, infections and gastrointestinal ulceration. Your veterinarian will monitor Kitty closely while he's on the drug.

  1. Side Effects and Drug Interactions

    • This strong medication can produce side effects. Common side effects, similar to to other corticosteroids, include excessive eating, drinking and urinating. Call your vet if your cat develops a potbelly, hair loss or thinning skin. Felines suffering from thin skin develop lacerations and tears. Cats receiving certain classes of antibiotics, ulcer and cardiac medications should not receive budesonide. Always ask your vet before giving your cat any supplements or over-the-counter medications.
