How to Prevent Polycystic Kidney Disease

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a condition in which groups of cysts form inside the kidneys. These non-cancerous cysts are circular, fluid-filled sacs and according to Healthscout.com, they affect more than 600,000 Americans. This disease, caused by a genetic defect, has two types. One is passed down by dominant genes, meaning only one parent has to have the disease to pass it to their children, and the other is passed down by recessive genes, meaning both parents must have the disease to pass it down. There are a few ways to prevent the onset of the disease.

Take steps to prevent the production of kidney stones. The best way to do this is to limit caffeine, alcohol, and sodium intake, especially after exercise. According to Mayoclinic.com, caffeine can, after exercise, amplify the dehydration of the body and rid it of electrolytes. This may ultimately cause the production of kidney stones.

Go to the doctor regularly to get check-ups. He will be able to test and see if blood pressure is at a healthy level and if body fat levels are stable. If the steps before this are completed regularly and accurately, then the doctor should confirm that everything is running correctly. Also, get your kidneys tested for any cysts or abnormalities.
