Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Cats

Inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD, is an umbrella term for conditions that cause chronic diarrhea, pain, vomiting and inflammation of the colon. In cats, IBD is a common problem that can lead to severe discomfort or fatal complications.

  1. Symptoms

    • The most common symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease in cats include diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss and bloody stool. They may be constant or cyclical.

    Alternative Diagnoses

    • Intestinal parasites, food allergy, chronic kidney failure, infection, pancreatitis and hyperthyroidism can all cause symptoms similar to IBD.

    Tests

    • To diagnose inflammatory bowel disease in cats, a veterinarian might collect a biopsy sample using endoscopy.

    Treatment

    • Corticosteroids, including prednisone and budesonide, are the first line of treatment against IBD in cats. Veterinarians might also prescribe a specialized diet.

    Prognosis

    • With treatment, most cats with inflammatory bowel disease will still lead comfortable, happy lives. Untreated IBD can cause pain, dehydration, blood loss and the weakening of the immune system.
