How to Treat a Cat's Broken Tail

Cats use their tails to keep their balance and express their moods. Their tails look flexible, but they can be broken just as easily as other body parts. A cast cannot be used on a cat's tail, so you can only treat the cat for pain and inflammation.

Things You'll Need

  • Prednisone
  • Tramadol
  • Cage

Instructions

    • 1

Take the cat to the vet as soon as you notice something wrong with its tail. Describe the accident that caused the break, or describe the cat's symptoms. Is the tail dragging? Is the cat trying to lift its tail, but can't? Is it crying in pain? Is it urinating accidentally? The vet will take an X-ray and confirm the break.

Give your cat 5 mg of prednisone to reduce inflammation. Your vet will prescribe this. Administer the prednisone once every three days, or as directed by the vet.

    • 3

Give your cat 1.8 mg of tramadol for each pound it weighs. Do this twice a day. Tramadol is a safe drug that will help relieve your cat's pain.

    • 4

Keep your cat in a cage for the first week or two to protect the injured area. If the break gets worse, the tail might need to be amputated.

Keep your cat indoors and keep an eye on it. Don't let the cat participate in activities that could slow the healing process. It can take up to six months for the break to heal.
