Located above your cat's eyes and behind the cheeks, the nasal cavity or sinus can become infected, causing cold-like symptoms. Sinus infections can be uncomfortable and messy, but treatment clears symptoms quickly.
-
Symptoms
-
Symptoms include sneezing, gagging and nasal discharge. Some cats may stop eating. Sinus infections can be painful.
Causes
-
Inhaled bacteria or fungus causes the sinus lining to become inflamed. The nasal cavity cannot drain, and a bacterial or viral infection occurs.
Complications
-
Untreated, a sinus infection can lead to weight loss and dehydration as your cat stops eating. Eye infections can occur as the condition worsens and spreads.
Diagnosis
-
Your veterinarian will examine your cat and take cultures or nasal swabs. An X-ray may be required.
Treatment
-
Antibiotics are used to treat sinus infections. Anti-inflammatories are sometimes prescribed as well.
Prevention
-
Keep your pet's immune system strong. Limit allergens in its environment and don't expose it to drastic temperature changes.
