Symptoms of Feline Kidney Stones

The symptoms of kidney stones in cats can be subtle since cats do not always show obvious signs of pain. However, an observant cat owner can learn to identify the common signs of this feline illness.

  1. Inappropriate Urination

    • If your cat begins to urinate outside her litter box--particularly if she's been reliable in the past--it can be a sign of kidney stones. Often she will urinate frequently in several places.

    Difficulty Urinating

    • Your cat may have difficulty urinating. If you see your cat straining in his litter box, it could indicate a urinary tract blockage typical of feline kidney stones.

    Blood In Urine

    • Blood in the urine is a common symptom. This is not always easy to spot in the litter box but, if your cat is urinating outside the box, you will notice streaks of blood in the urine.

    Low Urine Production

    • Feline kidney stones can limit urine production. Look for numerous small clumps of urine in the litter box.

    Abdominal Pain

    • Pain in the abdominal area can indicate feline stones. Your cat will react strongly when you pick him up if he has pain in the abdominal area.

    Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections

    • Any cat suffering from more than two or three urinary tract infections each year should be tested for stones. Urinary tract infections are often caused by the irritation caused by kidney stones.

    Vomiting

    • Many cats vomit for a variety of reasons, but if your cat is vomiting in conjunction with any of the above symptoms, you should suspect kidney stones.
