It is very common for cats to get fleas several times during their life. This happens even if you are the cleanest pet owner on the block. You can go to your vet and get a prescription to get rid of the fleas, but this prescription has some harsh chemicals in it. There is an alternative. You can get rid of the fleas naturally at home and spend a minimal amount of money doing it.
Things You'll Need
- Flea comb
- Water
- Lavender oil
- Cedar wood oil
- Dawn dish soap
- Citrus extract
- A friend
- Empty spray bottle
- Bowl
- Salt
Instructions
Fill your bathtub 1/4 of the way with lukewarm water. Place 3 tablespoons of Dawn dish washing liquid under the running water and then drip in 5 drops of citrus extract. Have a friend help you place your cat in the bath water. Cats hate to get a bath, but this is necessary to remove the fleas from the cat. Use the bath water to lather up your cat's fur, being careful not to get any soapy water in your cat's eyes. Keep the cat wet and lathered up for five minutes. This is enough time to kill any fleas that were on the cat. Drain the soapy water and rinse the cat.
Use a flea comb to comb through the cat's fur and remove any fleas or flea eggs that may be on your cat. You should purchase a flea comb at your local pet store as the teeth in a regular comb are too far apart. Dip the comb in some water that has a little dish soap in it. Then run it through your cat's fur. Wipe the comb off on a paper towel and start over. Repeat until you have completely combed the cat.
Place four drops of lavender oil and four drops of cedar oil in an empty spray bottle. Fill the spray bottle up the rest of the way with lukewarm water. Shake and then spray on your cat. Do this three times per day for four weeks. This will get rid of any fleas that are on your cat as well as any flea eggs that hatch.
Place your cat in your bedroom for the night. Sprinkle salt all over your carpets. Leave the salt overnight and vacuum up in the morning. The salt will cut open the fleas' exoskeletons and the fleas will die. When you are done vacuuming, let your cat out and use the salt in your bedroom. Vacuum up at night before you go to bed.
Wash all of the cat's bedding and toys. There is no point in treating your cat if you don't treat the area the cat plays and sleeps in. The fleas there will just re-infest your cat.
Place a bowl of soapy water under a night light. The fleas will jump toward the light and end up in the soapy water. They won't be able to jump back out and will drown.
