When a cat gets fleas, they can be incredibly difficult to get rid of. They infest a cat's home, bedding, and owners and seem to multiply despite the best efforts to kill fleas. The majority of a flea's life is not spent on a cat, but rather in a cat's home or yard, which takes some strategy to break the cycle and kill fleas. The most important part of a good strategy is to coordinate efforts, to kill fleas on a cat and it's surrounding areas on the same day. Here's how you can kill fleas on cats!
Things You'll Need
- Flea comb
- Flea shampoo
- Flea spray or bomb
- Vacuum
- Top spot flea treatment for cats
Instructions
Gather supplies to kill fleas. You will have the most success if you plan to kill fleas in all areas on the same day. Make sure you have everything you need before you proceed, to avoid interrupting the process.
Shampoo your cat with a flea shampoo. If you have never done this and are too intimidated, or your cat REALLY hates bathtime, you can skip this step if you have a good enough top spot product to kill fleas. A top spot flea product is applied on the skin between a cat's shoulder blades.
Use a flea comb on the cat to remove dead (and alive!) fleas and eggs. When you are satisfied that you have removed as many fleas as possible with the comb, apply top spot medication to cat. Use a better brand, many online companies sell these products much cheaper than the prices at a veterinarian's office.
Vacuum your entire house very thoroughly, even on wood or other non-carpeted rooms. Make sure you get under all furniture, vacuum beds and couches, and any other places your cat may have wandered. Dispose of the bag of the vacuum completely out of the house, as larvae and eggs may still be living in them and could get out to reinfest the home.
Either spray all of your floors, beds, and couches with a good quality flea spray, or use a flea bomb. A flea bomb has better results to kill fleas, but a good spray reapplied every other day can be very effective, as well.
Use a flea killing product for your yard if your cat or other pets are both indoors and out. Focus on shady areas, and sand or gravel, as fleas tend to migrate to these places. There are products designed specifically for this, or you can use more of your flea spray on these areas.
