Kittens are prone to many diseases, mild or severe, due to their immature immune system. Skin problems, such as the fungus called ringworm, are not uncommon. Although it does not cause serious illness, this condition is, however, very contagious (including to humans). The sooner ringworm symptoms are recognized and treated, the better.

Despite its name, ringworm is not a worm, but a type of contagious fungus.
Symptoms

Symptoms include hair loss, which is usually in patches. The kitten may scratch and occasionally a reddened area of flaking skin will also be present.
Note that some kittens who are carrying this fungus may not show any symptoms.
Treatment

Ringworm is treated via oral prescription only in the form of medicines and anti-fungal dips. Because of potential side effects for vulnerable kittens, only treat kittens under the guidance of a veterinarian.
Prevention/Solution

This fungus is sometimes present in soil. Keep kittens indoors and away from other animals displaying signs of this condition.
Considerations

You should wash your hands well after handling an infected kitten. In addition, wash all pet bedding in hot water with detergent. Dry the bedding on high heat to kill spores.
