Fat cats are cute, fuzzy animals that many folks adore. The Internet is filled with fat cat fan sites, and some sources estimate that as many as 40 percent of U.S. house cats are overweight. While your kitty's extra tummy may be cute, it can cause health problems and other concerns. It's best to take special care of your chubby cat.
Instructions
Schedule an appointment with a veterinarian to discuss your cat's weight and underlying health problems. Ask your vet for ideas about how to reduce the cat's weight and recommendations on diet.
Determine the cause of your cat's obesity. If the cause is hormonal, your cat may just be naturally round. However, overeating and lack of exercise can give your cat serious health problems.
Switch to a fixed meal schedule. Instead of keeping the cat bowl filled with food, try only feeding your cat at specific times during the day. This discourages overeating.
Give your cat plenty of attention and affection to help keep him from becoming stressed. Rub your cat's huge fuzzy tummy. While not all cats allow you to do this, access to a cat's tummy is a sign of trust, and helps you bond with your animal.
Exercise your cat. Kitty toys, string or even a laser pointer are great ways to get your cat running and jumping.
