How to Treat Common Cat Illnesses

If you have a cat for a pet, then you know that there are certain illnesses that cats are prone to getting. Understand the symptoms your cat is experiencing so that you can notify your veterinarian before the illness progresses. If you know the course of treatment ahead of time, it can help you financially and emotionally.

      Realize that many cats suffer from Urinary Tract Infections (UTI's). Frequent urination and peeing outside the litter box are signs of a UTI. Symptoms clear up in a few days after a treatment of antibiotics.

      Notice if your cat appears to have a cold. Upper respiratory infections are common in outdoor cats and will respond well to a course of antibiotics.

      Have your cat tested for feline distemper if they have no energy, are dehydrated or their hair falls out. Most common in kittens, feline distemper is very hard to treat and many cats die from it. Remember that there is a vaccine against feline distemper that you can get for your kitten.

      Accept that as your cat gets older their chances of developing kidney failure increase. Unfortunately, there is no cure for kidney failure in cats. Though expensive, an IV drip for dehydration and kidney dialysis is available for cats suffering from kidney failure.

      Observe symptoms of weakness, fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea and muscle weakness and your cat may have diabetes. A veterinarian must run blood and urine tests to confirm diabetes. Insulin shots and a special diet can help your diabetic cat.
