Because of a cat's curious nature, they sometimes get into things that could be harmful to them. If your cat goes outside, it's especially difficult to determine if your cat's illness might be due to poisoning from something he ate. Learn how to treat a poisoned cat so that you can react quickly if you start seeing unusual symptoms.
Instructions
Know that some plants are deadly if ingested. Eating a toad or salamander can also make your cat sick. In addition, if your cat eats something that has been exposed to poison, such as a mouse, bird or insect, it can also make the cat ill. If your cat suddenly becomes ill and you suspect it's been poisoned, take it to the vet immediately.
Tell your vet if you have some idea what's making your pet sick. Write down all the symptoms your cat has been displaying, along with when they first started and their severity. Your vet may be able to rule out certain toxins based on the symptoms your report.
Realize that some plants can cause skin irritations from the cat brushing past it. Let your vet know what plants you have in your home as well as in your yard so that they might be able to find the cause more quickly.
Prepare yourself for the possibility that the vet may induce vomiting in your cat to try and eliminate as much of the toxin as possible. If it's a skin irritation, the vet may give the cat a thorough bath. Cats experiencing symptoms dealing with the nervous system, such as convulsions or unconsciousness, are in serious trouble and need to be seen by a vet immediately.
