Does Pregnancy Affect a Cat's Attitude?

Female cats are pregnant between 63 and 66 days, according to the School of Veterinary Medicine at Louisiana State University. If you suspect that your queen is "with litter," you have that time frame to assess any indications of possible pregnancy, whether increased affection or unusually antsy actions.
  1. More Affectionate Than Normal

    • Pregnancy can bring out the loving, tender and sweet sides in almost any cat -- even the most detached and emotionally cool ones around. If your cat all of a sudden seems to have a lot of interest in being around you and in getting your undivided focus, whether through cuddling up on your lap rubbing against your body, take note if it. This uber-affectionate behavior probably isn't random and is likely an indication of pregnancy. This type of amiable attitude shift is especially prevalent toward the start of a feline's gestational period.

    Serene Attitude

    • If your cat just seems a lot more serene and laid-back, it may be the maternal side of her kicking in. She may even do a lot more purring than normal -- so get close to her and listen for it. If you combine this tranquil demeanor with reduced physical activity, another sign of pregnancy, your cat may seem like a totally different pet -- temporarily at least. This serene shift in attitude typically occurs around the beginning of gestation.

    Antsy Behavior

    • Some attitude changes in cats tend to occur later on in gestation, often right before parturition, the actual birthing process. Soon before labor, your cat may take on a very antsy and impatient attitude. She may constantly walk around in seemingly endless circles -- without any obvious goal. You also may notice her obsessively searching your home for an appropriate and cozy, dark and isolated nesting spot to give birth to her litter.

    Hostility

    • Along with antsy behavior, pregnant cats also often behave in uncharacteristically hostile manners as their gestational periods draw to an end. Cats frequently take on unpleasant attitudes toward other pets or unfamiliar people right before giving birth, so you may want to reconsider having any house guests over when your queen is heavily pregnant. She also may be very easily annoyed at this point.
